FAQs

WHAT IS A STOCK TANK POOL?

Originally, stock tanks are used for livestock on ranches. They have now become a high demand "lifestyle" product to serve as an affordable pool or hot tub option.

Check out this NY Times article on stock tank pools.

HOW DEEP ARE STOCK TANK POOLS?

We carry the highest quality Hastings STEEL ROUND END STOCK TANKS 20 GA. (.036" MIN) HEAVY DUTY. They are 24" deep.

DO STOCK TANKS GET HOT?

Yes and no. The high grade galvanized steel gets hot to touch in direct sun exposure when there is no water inside of it.

When your tank is full of water, the galvanized steel will cool down because the stock tank neutralizes the tank’s temperature.

Please note: the water in a stock tank pool will vary in temperature based on sun exposure and the location you are in.

If you plan to purchase our signature, insulated galvanized & poly COYOTE POOL or our WHIRLWIND COYOTE POOL (heated-option) they will keep your water cool in the summer and hot in the winter (if you purchase the “heated” option. These options will also last longer than a galvanized stock tank pool alone.

HOW DO I DRAIN MY COYOTE POOL?

We recommend using a sump pump. It's the fastest and cleanest way to drain a stock tank pool.

Steps:

  1. Purchase your sump pump here
  2. Hook up your hose to your sump pump
  3. Place the end of your hose where you want your water to drain
  4. Submerge your pump and allow air bubbles to escape
  5. Plug your sump pump to an outlet/ extension cord
  6. DRAIN!

PLEASE NOTE: *If you pump is not sucking water, check for kinks in your hose.

DO GALVANIZED STOCK TANKS RUST?

Overtime, galvanized stock tanks are known to rust, especially when they are used as livestock tanks.

They were originally manufactured for livestock to drink from and were not intended to have chemicals (chlorine or liquid hydrogen peroxide) poured inside.

Times have changed and some of us have evolved from ranch-life, so now galvanized stock tanks are used in urban backyard to corral your friends and family for a good time!

Corrosion happens when the galvanization in a tank starts to get eaten away due to hard water or chemicals. We do not recommend filling your stock tank pool with well water. Rust occurs due to a chemical reaction.

With some love and TLC, a galvanized stock tank can last years.

Poly stock tanks do not have an issue with rust or corrosion.

You can follow the following steps to best maintain your COYOTE POOL or stock tank pool:

  1. Use an inline filter to fill or refill a tank when needed. It’s “almost” like a water softener. The inline filter connects to a hose and provides a small barrier from chlorine and mineral deposits from city water to enter and attach to your  tank’s walls. If you decide to go with chlorine, use a chlorine dispenser.  Never throw a chlorine tablet directly into your tank or allow pieces of chlorine to settle.
  2. We recommend to all of our customers to use 35% hydrogen peroxide.  It’s not harsh as chlorine, it's safer for your plants and softer on your skin and best of all it doesn’t smell. Allow the hydrogen peroxide to dissolve a few hours before using.
  3. Skim your COYOTE POOL, vacuum your COYOTE POOL and cover your COYOTE POOL with our custom COYOTE POOL COVER.

If your tank is not covered, skim and vacuum your tank often every 3 days or so.  Allowing debris to settle at the bottom of your tank will also cause it to corrode faster.

HOW DO YOU KEEP THE WATER CLEAN?

All of our COYOTE POOL PACKAGES include a high quality Waterway sand filter, skimmer net, chlorine starter kit, chlorine floater and pool thermometer, so you're covered when you purchase a pool package.

If you are purchasing a single tank, then you will need to ADD these items to your cart.

Just like you would maintain an above ground pool, your filter & pump should be running, a sanitizer of your choice should be used (chlorine tablets or 35% hydrogen peroxide, use a skimmer to remove leaves, bugs, debris, use a pool vacuum to pick up any fine dirt that settles at the bottom of your stock tank pool and a cover to keep to keep it even cleaner.

Let’s face it, no one wants a dirty COYOTE POOL (or stock tank pool), so be sure to  add these items to your COYOTE POOL pool package and they will all be available to you once we arrive for delivery & install.

WHAT WE REQUIRE - CLEAR A PATHWAY FOR YOUR COYOTE POOL & HAVE YOUR PATH LEVELED BEFORE WE ARRIVE

Please read and read AGAIN!...

We REQUIRE your side yard and backyard to have a clear path from roof eaves, tree branches, trash cans, furniture, hanging lights, wires etc…

For example: If you ordered a 8x2ft tank, we require at least 10ft height clearance and 3ft wide entrance. If you ordered a 10x2ft tank, we require at least 11ft height clearance and 3 ft wide entrance. Please be sure to measure and check your side gate/roof eave clearance prior to your schedule delivery & install date.

WE ALSO REQUIRE a pre-leveled area for your tank to sit on. We recommend concrete or paver sand. DG can also be used but just to warn you… you will hear “crunching” when you step in your tank.

Personal Experience: We have used pea gravel under our tank, BUT disliked it. We did not care for the crunching sound under our tank. So we switched it out for paver sand. On another tank, we added paver sand plus children’s play mats. It’s super soft and quite.

TIP: If you plan to place your tank on a deck, please check your deck’s weight capacity. You are looking at thousands of lbs sitting on your deck 24/7.

WHAT IF MY TANK DOESN'T CLEAR FOR DELIVERY & INSTALL?

We did our best to educate you on our REQUIREMENTS and really hope this is not the case. If you do not have clearance, our team will assess the situation and decide whether they
can get it safely to your backyard another way. If a safe alternative
is not available, they will leave it on your front lawn/driveway. At
that point it will be your responsibility to get your tank to your backyard.

We do not accept returns.

A separate fee will be applied if our team has to return to install your filter.

DO I NEED A PERMIT TO HAVE A STOCK TANK POOL?

IN MOST CASES, you will NOT need a permit. Be sure to check with your HOA (if you are a part of one) and
if you are concerned.

NOTE: The 10 ft poly tanks are 28 inches deep and may not qualify as a “temporary/moveable” pool.

WHAT ABOUT A SALT WATER SYSTEM?

We don’t suggest using salt water systems for stock tank pools. Salt water is corrosive to galvanized steel.

STOCK TANK POOL VS. A TRADITIONAL POOL

Stock tank pools are affordable, you can move them, you can re-cycle them, and they will last a long time if you take care of them and maintain them properly.

You can’t install an in-ground pool for under 50-75K around here.

It takes time and effort to add/build an in-ground pool.

More than likely, you'll also have a landscape architect design and draw up the plans, an engineer will have to review and “engineer” it, plans will have to be submitted to the city or county for the permitting process, and then the construction phase.

After many months and a lot of $$$ you finally have an in-ground pool.

A pool adds value to your home, but the real question is what’s your ROI - return on investment?

More often than not, at least around here, a pool may only add about 25k or so of value to a home.

Your ROI also depends on the condition of said pool when you go to sell. People often don’t realize how pools age and deteriorate. Dated hard-scaping, the cruddy, cracked surfacing, and deteriorating equipment that is now more eyesore than asset.

Sometimes buyers don’t want the pool at all.

Either it’s too expensive to fix up, it’s a liability if its a rental property, they’re worried about the dangers of small children and pools, and they want to fill it in. That costs around 15k-ish.

Home owners needs to weigh the cost:benefit ratio before diving into the deep end.
